Summer always moves fast on Cape Cod. Cotuit manager Mike Roberts sees the Fourth of July as make-or-break time. It might be the true beginning of summer for the Cape as tourist mecca, but it’s the moment where you better be on track for the Cape as baseball mecca.
For his Kettleers this summer, it wasn’t looking good for a while. They got off to a brutal start, hampered by late arrivals and general struggles in pretty much every area. The Fourth of July was bearing down and the Kettleers were scuffling.
But things started turning around right when they needed to, and the Kettleers headed to Harwich tonight playing their best baseball of the summer.
It was never a question of motivation or chemistry. They shaped up as a fun squad. Now, the baseball is matching it and Roberts says he’s rarely been more pleased with a team’s improvement.
Temp players who opened the summer just hoping to hook on have stuck around, like Ross Achter and David Gerics. Reinforcements like Colton Hock have helped in a big way, and Hock had his best outing of the summer tonight.
Summer will keep moving fast. But the Kettleers are getting up to speed.
